Piglet escapes notorious pig farm, - rescued and now living a happy, loved life!

Jigsaw Escapes Hog Farm: Video of Him Eating Peanuts at Sanctuary story by Laura Simpson.

By Sanctuary One

Jigsaw escaped from a notoriously awful hog farm when he was just a baby. He ran away and was found by a kind person who took him to the Idaho Humane Society where they treated him for malnourishment and pneumonia. There he learned to love humans and to get along with all kinds of animals. He even learned to “sit.” But he was growing larger every day, and soon it was time for him to find a more permanent place to live.

That’s when he made the long trip to Sanctuary One in Oregon with the help of two very dedicated humane society volunteers. Along with our other rescued pigs Lisa and Lulu, our “three little pigs” teach people just how wonderful, loving and intelligent pigs are. Take a look.

Farmer saves cows from slaughter and provides idyllic life!

Written by David Lay of Missouri (Care of www.care2.com & The Great Animal Rescue)

Traveling with a neighbor to pick up some cows he bought, I ended up with a beef cow of my own. Minnie, a Brangus (a cross between an Angus and a Brahma) was among the 25 other cows my neighbor had bought. The owner asked him if he wanted this one cow who didn’t calve last year. When a cow misses a calving, very often they are “culled” because the farmer can’t take the chance she’ll miss again, costing him too much money.

“No, I really don’t want her,” my neighbor said.

The owner then said that he’d just have to “send her off” himself.

I don’t know why, but I felt sorry for the old girl and piped up “I’ll take her!” and so my neighbor loaded her onto his trailer with his newly aquired cows and off we went back home. I have a small farm with a few milk cows and I just couldn’t imagine what I was going to do with a beef cow, especially one that couldn’t have calves, but I did know I couldn’t stand the thought of her being slaughtered. She had a shiny, jet black coat and big, beautiful eyes, and I soon found out she was very tame and liked to have her tail scratched.

Since Minnie was a cow that couldn’t have calves, I just let her out with the other cows and my bull figuring I just had a big pet. Nine and one half months later, Maxwell, her new little bull calf, was born. It also turns out she’s a great milker, too. She was very easy to train to be milked, and gives a very rich, white milk. Since then she’s had another calf named Maynard, a daughter named Molly, and just last month had a little boy named Mutt. Because she was crossed with a dairy bull, her sons make great oxen, with long legs and powerful muscles, who can, therefore, live long and useful lives with someone who can use these big, beautiful animals to help around the place and eat hay when there’s nothing else to do. As for the heifer calf, I’m training Molly to go through the milking stall with the other cows, and now I’m figuring out a way to start a school to train oxen (and their owners).

Most cows aren’t this lucky. We slaughter more than 3 million cows a day in this country, and Minnie wouldn’t have even been a blip on the radar. Saving one cow doesn’t seem like much, until you meet her and you reallize what an incredible girl she is. She is very intelligent (she figures out how to open gates and finds the shortest path to the feed) and will always walk over to me for a scratch on her back when I come into the field. Minnie will live out her natural life here on my little farm, and will leave a legacy (and a lot of progeny) behind when she goes to that big pasture in the sky. Not bad for the “little” cow that couldn’t.

More on David’s Farm Haven

David’s farm cost him more than $40,000 last year and its income was a little over $6,000. It’s essentially a working sanctuary which he funds on his own. He does not separate calves from their mothers during nursing and would never dream of sending them off to become veal.

As for training oxen, he explains, “Animals that are trained to do work and are well cared for live long, happy lives. They often become very dear pets for their owners, whom I will try to screen to make sure they will not use these animals in cruel and inhumane ways; hence I create a way for an animal that would otherwise be someone’s food to not only live but to have an occupation that puts it in demand as something other than dinner, which is a very short occupation indeed.”

David knows that without his farm, most of the cows would become a ”half-eaten hamburger at McDonald’s thrown in the trash.”

Sarajevo Residents Help Stray Dogs

Sarajevo Residents Feed Stray Dogs (Video)

by Sharon Seltzer
March 6, 2012

The extreme cold weather that hit Europe last month made life on the streets even more difficult for the estimated 3,000 stray dogs in Sarajevo, Bosnia. A state of emergency was called in the capital city as record levels of snow paralyzed the region. Strong winds and avalanches stranded people and helicopters were called in to drop off supplies.

On Sunday, February 5 an appeal was made for residents to venture into the cold and feed the stray dogs that had gone hungry for many days. The response was overwhelming as people brought food to share.

For years city authorities have claimed they were trying to raise enough money to build shelters for these poor animals.

Below is a heartwarming video of that special Sunday when the residents of Sarajevo helped the stray dogs.

Police shoot ANOTHER dog on private property! Owners and their child horrified and distraught!

This is atrocious! Police shoot a dog AGAIN! And no punishment for police doing this on private property!

Target: New Mexico State Police
Sponsored by: Concerned Citizens

When Victoria Baca called the police to report that she had fallen victim to an internet scam, New Mexico State Police said they would come by her house. Baca asked the police to call before they came; instead, an officer arrived unannounced while Baca was out, ignored Baca's "Beware of Dog" sign, and hopped the fence to her property.

When Baca's dog, Jilly, approached the officer, he shot and killed her pet. Baca and her 4-year-old son arrived home to find Jilly dead on their front porch.

Though a spokesperson for the New Mexico State Police has apologized to Baca, the State Police claims "the officer was only acting in self defense" and that there is "no cause for disciplinary action."

Act now to tell the New Mexico State Police to conduct a full, impartial investigation into the shooting of Victoria Baca's dog, Jilly, and to appropriately discipline the officer in accordance with the findings of the investigation.

Muppet Movie - The Rainbow Connection

Something happy to put a smile in your day!

His Last Hug.

This beautiful photograph shows a homeless man in care, given the chance to say good-bye to his loving, faithful dog before the man passed over. A dignified end, and important good-bye for both. (Originally, this article had a photograph of another man hugging a dog but was removed on the copyright holders request. Their comments can be found below.)

However, this article is about the many thousands of animals that are put to sleep every day, all over the world. About the compassionate vets, workers, and volunteers who must cope with putting down these poor, sweet animals - animals who only want to live, love and be loved. It is about the last hugs that may be given to these beautiful animals, before their passing; animals that through no fault of their own, have ended up in a shelter or pound, and killed because these dogs (and cats)are not lucky enough to find a suitable new home within the very short period of time alloted to them to be adopted out. This article is also about the many dogs who are simply killed because they are the "wrong" breed. No dog should be classed the "wrong" breed! They are all share a common heritage, and all dogs are capable of the same unconditional love and companionship that dogs possess and express, if they are treated with care and kindness.

ALERT ALERT ALERT
Cumberland County, Fayetteville North Carolina

There is a breed ban which went into affect Monday the 5th of December 2011 all Dobermans, Rottweilers, Chow Chows, German Shepherds, Great Danes, Pitbulls, Mastiffs (all bully breeds), Akitas and Huskies. These dogs will be held for the mandatory 72 hrs and then will be killed, they are not going to be given a chance to be adopted. If the dog is an owner turn-in, then it will be killed the second it walks into the back.

We need petitions and people to speak out about this terrible, lethal discrimination towards certain BEAUTIFUL, LOVING, dog breeds!! Please lend your support by fb "liking" the animal welfare group listed below.

PS In reference to the photograph, no one should ever, ever have to put down a healthy, adoptable animal, and suffer the trauma and sadness that goes with this experience! The ones to do this work need to be compassionate people in order for the animals to be put to sleep humanely, but there are ways we can stop these unnecessary animal deaths from EVER happening again! Don't buy animals from online sources and breeders. Have your pet desexed, and encourage and educate others you know to be aware that it is VITAL that they also desex their pets. We need to encourage those looking to purchase a pet to seek out pet shelters to adopt an animal, and consider adopting an adult dog or cat. My cat Maxie was ten years old when I adopted him, and he had been abused and dumped at the pound to die. I adopted him from the pet store that ONLY rehouses animals from the Animal Welfare League shelter. He was very scared at first, and took a while to adjust to his new life. Only months later, he was the happiest, most fun, loving, sweet furry buddy you could ever imagine! We need to petition governments to enforce systems of compulsory pet desexing, pet care education programs and licenses (like sitting for an exam to qualify for a drivers license, people should prove they have the knowledge base and nature suitable to care for a pet or pets - a license would then qualify them to adopt and care properly for a pet or pets.) This photograph shows that this last hug was a loving one, but it should never have been his last hug.

This clip reminds us of the dangers of the nuclear industry. It is only a year since the nuclear catastrophe began in Fukushima, Japan, and the horror in that area continues, particularly in regards to the animals who were abandoned and left to starve to death or die from radioactive poisoning. Renewables, which are non-toxic and non-lethal, needs to be the the present and future of energy.
